This evening, Bootle FC Women travel to Hesketh Colts, with a chance to sneak into the play-off positions on the final day of the league season. Earlier today, we spoke to Bootle FC Women’s manager Alex Garbe to hear his thoughts ahead of tonight’s huge game.
*How proud are you that the squad is still fighting for the play-offs after such a difficult season?*
It’s been a really tough season. Especially the last few weeks, the fixture breaks, the lack of momentum, the injuries, it is so tough. But we have to keep fighting, we keep going, and the best thing about the group that we have is the mentality to fight right until the last day. To have the opportunity, in our first season together, to go to a cup semi final and it to be in our hands on the last day to go and get in the play-offs after the few weeks or month or so that we have had with the fixtures, it is an incredible achievement.
*How tough has the fixture congestion and injury list been for the group to manage?*
It has been really difficult. We have numerous players who are really struggling with injuries with such a crammed fixture schedule, playing Wednesday Sunday at such an intensity is so difficult. We have one who is playing through two broken toes, one playing through soft tissue damage, so it is difficult and the reason that we couldn’t play certain games is because we had 9 fit players - but we have to keep pushing through and where things have been against us, we need to keep on proving people wrong.
How special would it be to secure a play-off place in Bootle FC Women’s first season?*
It would be really special. However, we know that there’s a task in hand, three points at stake, and we know what we get if we achieve that. It is really important that we go and pick up three points tonight against a side where things will be made difficult for us - but if we do our jobs, do the basics, then there is no doubt that we can go on and win the game, and we will enjoy it tonight if so before focusing on Sunday’s semi-final.
