Bootle FC Women return to league action under the lights at the Berry Street Garage Stadium on Wednesday evening, as St Helens Rovers make the trip to Vesty Road.

Bootle FC Women will be aiming to return to winning ways this week as they resume league action against St Helens Rovers, looking to respond positively after last week’s narrow home defeat to Sefton Park Rangers.

The Bucks come into Wednesday night’s fixture on the back of a frustrating but encouraging outing in the LWYFL Open Age Cup, where they were held to a goalless draw by Wirral Phoenix before narrowly losing 4-3 on penalties.

Despite the shootout defeat, Bootle produced the stronger performance across the 90 minutes and created the better openings throughout. Poppie O’Neill and Abbi Fowler both went close during an impressive first-half display, with O’Neill striking the post for what proved to be Bootle’s best chance of the game. At the other end, Millie Davis produced a crucial goal-line clearance to preserve the clean sheet in a tightly contested encounter.

With the draw still earning a point under competition rules, Bootle did enough to secure their place in the semi-finals, providing another positive step in what has been a promising cup run.

Attention now turns back to league matters, where the Bucks will be determined to build momentum and climb the table.

St Helens Rovers arrive at Vesty Road for the third time this season still searching for their first win since February. Their recent run has included a walkover victory away to Sefton Park Rangers, a 3-0 defeat at Hesketh Colts, and a 4-2 loss away to Clay Brow in a high-scoring contest.

The visitors currently sit second from bottom in the league table, one point behind Bootle in eighth, meaning Wednesday’s clash could have significant implications in the battle for league position. A win for the Bucks would create valuable breathing space, while the visitors will be eager to leapfrog Bootle with an away result.

This will be the fourth meeting between the two sides this season, with Bootle holding the upper hand across the previous three encounters.

The most recent meeting came in March in the LWYFL Open Age Cup, when the Bucks claimed a deserved 2-0 victory at Vesty Road, with Poppie O’Neill starring with a goal and an assist.

Before that, the sides met in the LCFA Women’s Challenge Cup in October, where Bootle were unfortunate to bow out on penalties following a 1-1 draw. Ev Isuala was on target for the Bucks that afternoon.

Their first meeting of the campaign came back in September, when Bootle produced one of their standout league performances of the season with an impressive 4-1 away win over the Rovers.

With home advantage, a strong recent record in this fixture, and important league points on the line, Bootle FC Women will be looking to deliver another big performance under the lights at Vesty Road.
