With a depleted team and only 6 players available a torrid day looked on the cards against the unbeaten table toppers Silcox Villa.
Top goalscorer Nathan showed his team ethic by playing in goal and making some fine saves during a first half where the opposition had several opportunities to take the lead. Lucas and Cody playing out of their skins to protect their keeper and providing some quality forward passes for James, Cameron and Chloe to try and catch Silcox on the break. A couple of half chances for Blues kept their spirits up and their never say die attitude against the best team we’ve faced so far. Blues managed to see it out to half time with their goal intact.
HT Bootle 0-0 Silcox
The 2nd half began with the arrival of an extra player, Max. The young keeper took his place between the sticks allowing Nathan to play his normal role. Silcox utilised their subs regularly while the Blues manfully ran their socks off. Silcox began to press forward more and more as the game continued. Lucas and Cody trying their best to foil any attacks. On the couple of occasions the ball got beyond them Max pulled off a few amazing saves earning plaudits from the opposition management.
A couple of breakaways almost saw Blues pierce the opposition’s last line of defence without any joy. With the game entering the last few minutes Silcox finally manged to snatch what turned out to be the winning goal. A melee in the Blues penalty box finally saw the ball pass a valiant Max. A really brave performance from the team with Lucas earning the Man of the Match award for a sterling defensive display. A special thanks to Mighty Max (and his Dad) for turning up at late notice to help us out.
